Part of the Commissions & Outreach stream A Long Walk To Grimethorpe was a commission for electronics, brass band and documentary film. Artists and partners on the project included Joe Snape, Ismar Badzic, The University of Sheffield, The City of Sheffield Brass Band, Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and Netherthorpe Primary School.
The project offered interactive brass workshops to year three and four pupils from a school in an area of low cultural engagement in Sheffield. The workshops were led by undergraduate students from the University of Sheffield, and in turn, the students received workshops from The City of Sheffield Brass Band and the world-famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band. The project formed a chain of inspiration and learning, right from the youngest and least experienced, through to the very best within the banding world.
The workshops, composition, documentary film and performance of the piece offered a rumination on the relationships between sound, geography, musical heritage and cultural belonging.
